Nurturing Young Story-tellers: Highlights from Our Second Online Workshop

The Creative Story-Tellers online workshop series continued with its second module, “The Pedagogy of Supporting Children to Become Creative Storytellers,” held on March 12, 2025. This engaging session brought together more than 90 early childhood educators, practitioners, and storytelling enthusiasts, all eager to explore child-centered learning approaches and techniques for empowering children’s voices in storytelling.

✨ Key Focus: Child-Centered Learning in Storytelling

This module highlighted the importance of putting children at the center of learning—fostering creativity, independence, and individuality. Participants explored how play, exploration, and curiosity-driven activities shape children’s development and self-expression.

Lesson 1: Child-Centered Learning Approaches

Led by ROKIDS, this session introduced educators to child-centered pedagogies and how they can be applied in storytelling. Discussions covered:
✔️ How children learn through play, exploration, and interaction
✔️ Recognizing individual learning styles and interests – Developing observation skills to tailor activities to each child’s unique strengths.
✔️ Encouraging independence and creativity – Techniques for creating an open-ended learning environment where children feel empowered to express themselves.

Lesson 2: Techniques for Empowering Children’s Voices in Storytelling

Facilitated by OULU, this session provided practical strategies for helping children become confident storytellers. Key topics included:
✔️ Giving children the space to tell their own stories – Encouraging self-expression through drawing, role-playing, and digital storytelling.
✔️ Fostering trust and confidence – Creating a supportive atmosphere where children’s voices are heard and valued.
✔️ Collaborating with families – Strengthening connections between educators and parents to support holistic child development.

🎭 Interactive Sessions & Hands-On Activities

Participants engaged in group discussions and interactive exercises, reflecting on real-world applications of child-centered storytelling techniques. Educators also exchanged best practices and explored ways to integrate storytelling into daily learning routines.
